What is Age Calculator?
An age calculator converts a date of birth into a precise, human-readable age using calendar-level arithmetic. The naive approach — dividing total days by 365.25 — is close but wrong: it produces fractional years that don't match how humans actually count age, and it produces off-by-one errors near leap days. A correct age calculator borrows across year / month / day boundaries the same way you'd compute it in your head: 'how many complete years, then how many additional months, then how many additional days?'. This page uses that algorithm and additionally reports the total time span in every commonly-requested unit (weeks, days, hours, minutes), the day of the week you were born, and the exact date of your next birthday.
How to calculate your exact age
- 1Enter your date of birth in the first field. The tool accepts any date from 1900 onward.
- 2The default 'age as of' is today — leave it to see your current age, or pick a past / future date to see your age at that specific moment.
- 3Read the primary result: your exact age in years, months, and days.
- 4Scroll down to see the full time span (weeks, days, hours, minutes), the day of the week you were born, and the countdown to your next birthday.
Use Cases
Legal / eligibility age check
Voting, driving, drinking, retirement — every jurisdiction has age thresholds. This tool tells you the exact date of eligibility, not just an approximate year.
Pet or child age tracker
Pets and infants gain months quickly; a 6-month-old is very different from an 8-month-old. Track exact age in months and days.
Historical curiosity
How old was Einstein when he published relativity? How old were you on 9/11? Pick a target date and find out.
Birthday countdown
See exactly how many days remain until your next birthday and which day of the week it falls on.
Tips & Best Practices
- ▸Ages are computed against your local calendar — the date '1 Jan 2000' means midnight in your local time. Users in different timezones may see a one-day difference in the countdown near midnight, which is expected.
- ▸For someone born on February 29 in a non-leap year, most legal systems observe the birthday on March 1 — the tool matches that convention.
- ▸The 'total years' number in the time-span card includes the fractional part (e.g. 34.5) whereas the primary result is the calendar-level breakdown; both are useful.
- ▸This tool never uploads your date of birth. If you're on a shared computer, clear the input when you're done — the browser might otherwise auto-fill it on the next visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is age calculated?
Age is computed using calendar-day arithmetic, not by dividing total days by 365.25. That means someone born on 29 Feb 2020 turns 4 on 28 Feb 2024 (their observed birthday), not on some fractional date. Years, months, and days borrow across boundaries the way a human would compute an age.
Does the tool store my date of birth?
No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser as client-side JavaScript. The date is not uploaded, logged, or persisted anywhere.
Can I calculate age at a specific future or past date?
Yes. Change the 'Age as of' date to any point in time — future (how old will I be at my wedding?) or past (how old was I when the moon landing happened?).
Which timezone is used?
Your local timezone. The date is treated as a local calendar day, so a 1 Jan 2000 birthday means midnight local time on that date. If you're in UTC+13 and your friend is in UTC-11, you may see one day's difference in the 'days until next birthday' number — that's the timezone talking, not a bug.
How does 'next birthday' handle February 29?
If your DOB is February 29 and the target year isn't a leap year, the tool schedules the birthday on March 1 — the day most jurisdictions treat as the observed birthday for legal purposes. Some cultures use February 28 instead; adjust the target date manually if that matches yours.
